The Free and Reponsible Search For Truth and Meaning, and Politics

UUs believe in the Free and Responsible Search for Truth and Meaning.

It seems that our politics has gotten increasingly irresponsible.

Mike Huckabee wants to amend the U.S. Constitution so that it promotes his god's standards. It appears that Huckabee is a Dominionist and does not respect the separation of church and state, nor the free and responsible search for truth and meaning.

Huckabee impressed me during a debate amongst the Republicans.

I am a believer in both the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America, as well as the Constitution of the United States of America, and Huckabee quoted them both.

A man of tremendous knowledge and wisdom when it comes to understanding the foundational teachings of this great nation.

He quoted directly, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." (second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence)

He then went on to brag about the fact that, as governor of Arkansas, he is proud to have introduced the legislation and signed into law an amendment to the Arkansas Constitution that makes marriage equality illegal.

He proved to me that night that he not only fails to understand that the Constitution is designed to restrict the government in their dealings with the people - not to restrict the people in their dealings with the government. He also proved that he does not believe that all men are created equal - despite his fancy oratory of American history.

Huckabee impressed me alright, but I'm not sure I am impressed in the manner he expected.
