Why does a man hate another man?

Several months back, we at Pullman were challenged on the topic of prejudice. A description of the Museum of Tolerance (Los Angeles, CA) was given where the lobby depicts several aspects of intolerant behavior and the only way to enter the museum itself is through one of two doors - one challenges the visitor to admit they have a prejudice and the other allows the visitor to claim they carry no prejudices. The "unprejudiced" door is locked.

This is a challenge statement - carrying with it the belief that every person on this Earth, in one way, shape, or form, is prejudiced.

This weekend, my partner had the opportunity to spend several days immersed in a UU Youth program and was uplifted by the experience. The report was that she saw efforts to develop young men/women into adults who understand responsibility and where they fit in the world. For the first time in months, she had a renewed faith in the human race.

Then came worship.

She decided to not stay at the host church for their service, rather to drive most of the way home and celebrate with one of the other churches in our home cluster. What followed was one of the most disturbing events she has experienced since making the decision to join a UU congregation.

From the pulpit came 20 minutes of a hateful diatribe aimed at America's police officers. The "sermon" painted broad generalization as to how police officers "assault" citizens, and racially profile individuals. The individual who lead the service was obviously deeply engrossed in their hatred of a group of men and women - all the while speaking about how horrible it is that THEY held preconceived notions about the citizens they serve and are not deserving of the public trust. The allegations did not focus on individuals, rather placed all those who enforce the laws into the same caste of ruffian thugs who have little intelligence and delight in the opportunity to cause physical and emotional damage to the innocent.

The ethnic background of the speaker? European-American (the term "white" rather bothers me). The speakers social background? Upper, middle-class from the suburbs of Boston. The number of times the speaker has had any interaction with the police? None. Aside from the obvious ethnic background, the answers came from his own admissions during his "sermon."

At what point does this speaker choose to acknowledge his own prejudicial hatred of law enforcement? By what moral authority does he speak regarding the perversion of justice caused by hatred - or perhaps he speaks from first-hand knowledge.

John 8:7 provides a story wherein Jesus (aside from any divine aspects some give him, he did speak wisdom) says "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone...."

Is the face of law enforcement in this nation spotless? Not by a long shot. Those involved in law enforcement find the acts of a few to be a reason to hang their head in shame, if not directly deny their affiliation, regarding their occupation. But then, I am certain that RC priests, lawyers, and other professional groups also feel the sting of the actions of but a few.

Perhaps, before making strong allegations, we should ensure that our house is clean - prior to pointing out the dust mote in a neighbor's house.

Hi Mark:

Thanks for your post. The police officers I know are dedicated people who serve our community with dedication, integrity, and valor. As you point out, there can be malpractice and poor performance in any profession, and yet most professions don't put it on the line everyday like police officers do being invited to not only witness but get involved in the worst that our society has to offer. Thank you for your service, your advocacy, and being a good example of police work well done with integrity and honor.

All the best,

David

"Perhaps, before making strong allegations, we should ensure that our house is clean - prior to pointing out the dust mote in a neighbor's house."

I have been saying that to outrageously hypocritical U*Us who accusingly point the finger at others while ignoring and even denying their one similar or identical failings for quite some time now. . . As a result of protesting against such hypocrisy I have had plenty of opportunity to deal with the Montreal police force thanks to U*Us who lend a whole new meaning to the rterm "police harassment" by repeatedly calling in spurious complaints about my legitimate public protest against U*U injustices, abuses and hypocrisy. I can say that the vast majority of Montreal police officers have acted with a high degree of professionalism and integrity in their dealings with me, only a small handful of Montreal police have abused the power and authority invested in them. All of the half-dozen or so Montreal police officers who conduct arrests over the years treated me with more dignity and respect while arresting me than some of the U*Us I know do on any given Sunday. . . I publicly complimented the Montreal officers who arrested me in December of 2000 in a (truncated) letter to the editor to the Montreal Mirror. The two Montreal police officers who arrested me in the spring of 2007 as a result of Rev. Diane Rollert's deeply misguided effort to seek a restraining order against me were friendly and even somewhat sympathetic as may be confirmed by reading this Emerson Avenger blog post about the arrest.

As I said there have been a few incidents where Montreal police officers have abused their authority and I have responded appropriately to those incidents but, on the whole, I have a high degree of respect for the police and the difficult job they have to do. You might find this recent Emerson Avenger blog post about a U*U "Citizen's Police Officer" to be of some interest. This U*U Tube video of U*U COP is a hoot. ;-) Several years ago the editor of a Montreal weekly newspaper told me that the local police at Station 12 were of the opinion that the Unitarian Church of Montreal is "crazier than you are". . . The well desefved earful U*U COP got from a real Montreal police officer bears this out. Interestingly enough the Montreal police have not intervened in my public protest since the day I posted that video of U*U COP to YouTube. . .

This is not about the police - it is about hatred and those who promulgate it. Read past the fact that the sermon was LE specific and read what I say regarding prejudice - the target is IMMATERIAL.

I am quite aware that this blog post is about hatred but it was obviously inspired by prejudice and hatred against the police as expressed in the "sermon" which presumably, but not necessarily. . . was delivered by a lay person. You clearly said, "From the pulpit came 20 minutes of a hateful diatribe aimed at America's police officers." And you did not provide any other examples of hatred. It was clear that you were upset about prejudice and hatred directed against police and, if I read David Markham's follow-up comment correctly, you are a police officer yourself Mark. I thought you might like to hear some support for the police from someone who had plenty of experience with the police.

For the record, the protest that I have been engaging in in front of the Unitarian Church of Montreal for almost a decade now began as a protest against the anti-religious prejudice, intolerance and outright bigotry and hatred of Rev. Ray Drennan and other fundamentalist atheist "Humanist" U*Us and the fact that their anti-religious prejudice and hatred has been condoned and even effectively endorsed by the Board and congregation of the Unitarian Church of Montreal, former UUA President Rev. Dr. John Buehrens, and the Executive of the UUA's Ministerial Fellowship Committee. Montreal Unitarians and the UUA have yet to respond to my complaints about and protests against such anti-religious prejudice and hatred in a manner that even remotely lives up to U*U "covenants" that purport to affirm and promote justice, equity and compassion in human relations. Au contraire, U*Us have gone to great lengths to try to silence my criticism and dissent and have even misused and abused the Canadain Criminal Code and Montreal bylawys in their deeply misguided efforts to force an end to my legitimate public protest against the ant--religious intolerance and bigotry that U*U have either directly perpetrated or indirectly perpetuated as well as other U*U injustices, abuses and hypocrisy that have come to my attention. Perhaps when I have more time available I will return here and post in more detail about the hostile and hateful anti-religious intolerance and bigotry of fundamentalist atheist "Humanist" U*Us that makes too many U*U "churches" anything but "Welcopming Congregations" to God believing people. . .
